The compound is generally ethylene glycol. Any solute that lowers the freezing point also simultaneously raises the boiling point.

because when you dissolve one mole of anything in water its freezing point goes down 1.86 degrees celsius and also up anti freeze can be ethylene glycol

propylene glycol also used. less toxic.
