I'm 21 year old male in college, just wondering what others do to motivate themselves in their lives.

And for people who don't have trouble being motivated, are you able to objectively analyze why that is?

go do some charity work. or get an x-box 360 (it worked for my boyfriend).

you prolly need sunlight and exercise. summer's coming up. take a road trip with some friends or a mini vacation to the beach or something. get a bike and ride it around. eat some better foods. drink more water. start reading something other than required reading. 'house of leaves' is good. creepy and good. or maybe 'on the road'. there is lots to do in the world. you just need to get out there and do something.

what's keeping you down is prolly a mixture of, diet, lack of exercise, s.a.d., and worries about school. take a break reevaluate your life. go from there.

I think the best way to motivate yourself is by setting a goal. Be sure to work hard progressively to reach that goal and make new goals in the process. I am fairly easy at motivating myself because I am persistent in finding a way to do so. For example, I set a goal to become physically fit and have an almost near model body. That might sound ridiculous right? But I motivated myself to read as much as I can on personal fitness and ask people loads of questions. I now go to the gym 5-6 days out of the week and am persistent in reaching my goal. I have achieved wonders because I have a low percentage of body fat and gained a noticeable amount of muscle.

I'm the same age as you by the way, and I just want to say that being ambitious helps because these are people that have dreams. Heh, having a girlfriend that appreciates you for who you are is even a great source of motivation. She will push you to achieve your goals or plans and even find strengths and weaknesses that you never noticed yourself. Good luck in the process!

This a challenge though some people do seem to be self-motivated. IF you do not find yourself one of those people, there are things you can do to get yourself started.

First, set goals. Even if the go is to simply finish a simple task. After the goal is set, make a list of the things you would have to do to meet the goal.

Look at the things you do when you can choose what to do (like listen to music, read a book, take a walk, see friends, spend time alone, go for a drive, etc.)

Impose on yourself (this is the hard part) that you have to do one of the steps on the list BEFORE you can do something you usually get do when you want to. That is, make completing some task the requirement to get something you like.

The point is to start being successful at easy tasks, at simple things and rewarding yourself for success, even if small at first. As you earn your reward for doing something, you can start adding harder things to do and give yourself more of the reward. (this is hard, it calls for self-discipline but it is worth learning how to do it).

Soon you start being rewarded for simply doing the task and not so much for the reward, that is doing the task becomes rewarding. You'll find that the more you do, the more you start to do new things and do more things. Ask a busy person. You'll find that busy people get things done, by doing things you accomplish more and more and those successes will help you take on new things and soon you will be motivated to try things you've never tried, work at things you didn't used to want to do at all, and you'll feel satisfied and rewarded for pushing yourself forward.
