Because the govt is allowed to make laws that restrict your freedoms if the govt thinks what you are doing is dangerous.
So, the govt has decided that certain drugs are dangerous, and have no valid medical or social uses. These are largely arbitrary decisions, and often have little to do with science or medicine.
I don't agree with govts being able to do that, but it's the current law. And one that's not likely to change.

Freedom these days is an illusion.
But if you moved to British Columbia where I am from you could legally smoke your joint.
Let me rebut Lisa's response. Murder involves treading on the freedoms of another person. Smoking a joint does not. There is a big difference there.

Because the government likes to legislate it's morality on us.
The previous posters comment about murder is laughable. as if the two are even remotely similar.
The fact is that alcohol and ciggarettes are far worse than marijuana.. yet both remain legal. I can not figure out why.

At the risk of stating the obvious, in reality if you smoked a joint in your house, I don't think anyone would care. And the next obvious reason you can't is because weed is an illegal substance duh!!

Because it's against the law, just like stealing, rape and murder. Marijuana seems to be like Alcohol, makes you dazed, kills brain cells, and who knows what else. If probably gives you lung cancer too, HA like breathing in that $hit isn't bad for you.
