I have been volunteering at our local adult learning center working with people who are here from another country and are trying to learn English, and I LOVE IT! I obviously would do it for free because I am.However I would love to know what kind of education you have to have to get a job doing this & actually get paid to do it.I have heard that you know you have found your true calling in life when you find something that you love to do so much that you would do it for free, and I think this may be it for me. These people are so happy to be in America, it is so refreshing. Please help or give me some websites that I could go to, to get more information about this.
Thanks!

Usually a degree with a CELTA (Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults) or equivalent.

You should either be a native speaker or have a high level of English language skill.

There is very little well-paid work in the ESL field. If you have a Bachelor's degree in an English-related field and a TEFL or TESOL certificate you would be eligible for entry-level work in private language schools. You're looking at irregular hours, low hourly pay, no benefits and unpaid prep time. TESL is a field in which it's very hard to advance without more education. If you had the above qualifications AND a Master's degree in Applied Linguistics or TESOL you would be eligible for college and university work. This would be more like a "real" job.

A good TEFL/TESOL certificate is at least 120 hours and includes supervised teaching practice. Online certs aren't worth the paper they're printed on. If you want to go overseas, the qualifications needed are basically the same.

This question has been asked a million times on the site below- read some old posts for info.

It depends on the company you want to work for, and the level of student you want to teach.

For example, if you want to teach in public school, as I do, you need a BA degree and a teaching credential, preferably with a single subject English authorization.

There are other companies that people pay to teach them English that don't require teachers to have a credential.

I'd check out this website. It'll have much more info:
