I fully agree with you. Picking up gaps and placing the ball in gaps require sound batting technique and you can accelerate the score even without hitting the ball in the air.

The aim of cricket is to get runs, and to not get out. If you stay in, then you have a chance to get runs - so it's really more important to stay in. If you're not sure you can hit it far, then do a drive pointed downwards, so that it won't hit the wicket. There's no point stretching for wides or near wides because you don't have to hit them - and you get runs if they keep bowling wides. I don't really know what you mean by picking gaps, but if you have the chance, and there's a lazy fielder idling about - hit it his way, since he won't be 'on the ball' so to speak.

If you want more help with cricket, try your coach if you have one, research on the internet, or try your local bookshop or library for tips and techniques. I've listed a couple of websites in my sources section that should start you off.

Hope that helps,

Playing the ball along the ground is always safe.If you are sure enough where you hit, you can very well take the aerial route hitting between or over the fielders..But in a pitch of low or uneven bounce you will have to be careful while lofting the ball.

In ODI's
You have to have a lot of talent in order to score runs .
Not only picking gaps, you have score at a high strike rate something 80 +.
You must know Field restrictions an placements.
You must always be aware of the required run rate & current going rate. You also have to support your fellow batsman.
Like wise there are so many criteria.
