You ARE kidding, I hope... don't they teach this in school any longer?

The U.S. was providing support in the way of arms and ammo to the Brits through the Lend Lease program, which granted the Bahamas to the U.S. for a period of 99 years (the least part) in return for the LENDING of munitions and arms to the Brits to fight Germany with.

The U.S. was suckered into the war when Japan attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 Dec. 1941.

We got involved in the war based on a fear of the Germans attacking the U.S. at some point, the U.S. supplying the British with supplies in their fight with the Germans, and the naval base at Pearl Harbor (recently built) building fear in the Japanese. The Japanese considered Pearl Harbor a "dagger at the throat of Tokyo" and would only be a matter of time before the "British sympathizer" would attack them. Therefore the japanese fleet with their new technology known as "torpedo planes" attacked the U.S. Naval fleet in a Sunday surprise attack on Pearl Harbor before the U.S. could properly respond. The base was almost completely destroyed.

After this attack, President Roosevelt encouraged Congress to act in response to this tragedy before the germans saw this as weakness. As a result, for the first time we launched bombers from Aircraft carriers for the first time ( never done before) and we destroyed a good part of Tokyo.

This was important because after Pearl Harbor was destroyed, the Japanese thought themselves to be out of range of U.S. bombers. It sent a very strong message to them that "we are coming for you" and "you can be defeated by american spirit despite Pearl Harbor".

Try looking at movies like "Tora! Tora! Tora!" or the recent "Pearl Harbor".

Mainly because Japan bombed Pearl Harbor. Then Germany declared war on the US for no apparent reason.
