I keep hearing this assertion and I'm sorry, but it's crap. None of us has lost our freedom to speak freely. Don't assume that freedom comes with a guarantee that no one will react, or react negatively, to what you have to say. You are still allowed to speak. You do not have a Constitutional right to the final word.

Runn N: I've never heard a liberal say that Bush has taken away their freedom of speech.

Thank you for posting that. You're absolutely correct. Free speech is constantly under attack from different parties, mostly people who don't want to hear certain things (violence, racism, adult content, etc.), but the courts have done a fantastic job of slapping down those attacks year after year. Too many people don't understand what protections the freedom of speech does and doesn't provide, or the responsibilities that come with it.

You are correct that the Constitution doesn't guarantee the final word, just an equal opportunity to be heard.

But many individuals have been silenced, by govt officials (schools, police, etc) acting on their official authority, simply because the officials didn't like the message being expressed.

At least one of those cases was recently heard in the Supreme Court -- the school official who tore down a banner on a public street (not on school property) because it was being held by a student, and the school official objected to the message.

So, while entire groups have not been silenced, individuals have been. Not that that is any different now than in any past decade. Some officials just refuse to abide by the law.

Freedom of speech includes (for example) the freedom of giving the answer: "Good question", in yahoo, when one has no other answer to a question which he/she completely agree with, without having this answer deleted.

Nobody here thinks the FCC is an uncostitutional infringement on free speech on the radio and television? Levying fines on broadcasters for things they find obscene? Am I the only one?

Thank you. You may have concerns over many things in an administration which ever side you are on but as of yet the only infringements we have are those we have chosen to have.

It's funny that people that claim they have lost their freedoms, (whatever they may be) are the one that have the right to come on here and say those things. They're just a bunch of hypocrits if you ask me.

I have mine. If anyone out there has lost theirs, maybe we can organize search parties to help them find it.
