It really depends on the year. On newer models they are about the same. (I own a 2003 Yamaha and a 2000 Honda). With models older than '90, the Hondas are generally more dependable but Yamahas are faster. (I assume dependable means it will take a beating and keep goin).

First of all, I would like to confess you that I am not an expert in
ATVs. However, I will try to help you to make a good choice.
After a thorough searching, I discovered the following useful URLs:
1. http://www.atvrideronline.com/
2. http://www.lpg-atv.co.uk/
3. http://ezinearticles.com/?Why-Customers-Prefer-Kazuma-ATVs&id=427526

Please read some of the opinions of the qualified gentlemen who
tested their products.
From my point of view, "dependable"="well maintained"--and this
leads to the availability of the "consumables" + "spare parts". And
it also means, which (local) representative/distributor, of the two
makers, is offering the best technical support.
It might be useful, for you, to find out which company has more
experience in domain; and more achievements. In this purpose,
you should visit their websites:

All my mates and I have had Yammies for many years and none of us have had any problems at all, they are very reliable , you just have to make sure that they are serviced regularly (just like any other). Although I have heard the Hondas are pretty good to, but I'm yet to know someone that has one.

Honda sport/recreation quads are more dependable than the Yamahas.
Yamaha hunter/woods/utility quads are more dependable than the big Hondas (rincon, recon, rubicon, foreman).
