the sutras are like a Hindu version of the bible. they are considered holy texts to help you fulfill your spiritual potential in 5 different areas. the Kama sutra has to do with the spirituality of sex.

Kama Sutra, is an ancient Indian text on human sexual behavior, widely considered to be the standard work on love in Sanskrit literature.

One might well wonder why this is even included among the subject of history because it isn't really a history of anything. What it is, is sort of a how-to manual on sexuality, practice, positions, attitude, and the spiritual approach to sexuality.
Many couples use this as a guide to what they can do while together. It opens up the door of simple sexuality without really getting very weird or kinky, and allows the couple to enjoy each other's bodies and the art of making love, and it is an art, not just something that happens.
Somehow it is very odd that we study everything yet we leave sexual practice and behavior entirely to chance.
