Several friends, including my girlfriend, just got arrested. They actually were not arrested when the police found out how old they all were, 13, but were told they were going to be questioned the next day. Well, its the next day. They got interrigated, and all of them are crying. I don't know what to do. They had sent a threat to a friend over email as a joke from a new email account, and the friend's parents called the cops. I managed to keep them cool by keeping them laughing, along with the help of some friends, but after they got questioned, I didn't know what to do. Now school is out, and I need to know how to comfort them tomorrow and through email / IM. Does anyone have an idea of what to do? It's really bad; the victim's parents want to press charges.

Just keep on trying to keep them calm. They were wrong for doing that anyway. People take jokes too seriously nowadays.

What they did was serious or they would not be in this situation.

They do however deserve the support of a good friend.

Remind them that they are young and that they should really trully apologize and say that they did not mean to cause harm.

The social climate in high school these days is very difficult and in no way should anyone take threats lightly.

Imagine if the mother did nothing and something actually happened to her child.

They need to forgive themselves, count their blessings that they are young enough that they will not have this on their permanent record and chalk it up as a lessoned learn.

Make it clear to them that getting angry is not the solution.

When it passes everyone involved may able to see the seriousness and that harmless pranks are not always harmless.

Wish them well , stand by their side and make sure that the threatend party feels okay as well.

Good luck you are a good friend.

You should really stay out of it. Even if it was a joke with all the violence going on in the world threats should be taken seriously. This is hopefully a situation they will learn from. If you want to do something positive encourage them to write a letter of apology to the victim and their family. You should also think twice about the people you are associating with. How do you think you would feel if that was a member of your family being threatend? Sorry this isnt' the answer you wanted, but I don't feel sorry for your friends. They should be punished.

Well, first, I'd stay away from the email IM for a while. It's what got them into trouble, that and their poor judgement. If you can get together, sit around and talk or listen to music a while, just try to let them forget the trouble for now. Unfortunately, the consequences of poor judgement frequently outweigh the actual intent of the act...in other words, it sounds like they're getting punished beyond the bad they did, but they have to realize what they did was VERY wrong, and should never happen again. The best I can suggest is, what you aleady did, help them get their minds off it a little.

Making threats of any kind, especially if it's for violence, should be taken seriously. Your friends should have known better. Hopefully, if this was just a joke, not very funny, the parents will calm down and drop the whole thing. At their age I wouldn't think the police will be too hard on them. Hopefully, they've learned a lesson.

As a mother of 2 teens ages,16,18,Ican tell you that a good laywer always helps My sons have (and still are) on probation here in pa. the judges are more lenient on younger kid's. Best case scenario would be for the parent;s of the "victim's" to drop charges. My 16 yr. old has been locked up twice in detention centers,He was "Good" for awhile, but in the long run it really didn't help .However, I know several kids locked up & it scared them enough to get it together.

people love written apologies and personal apologies. get your friends to call the police and offer it yourself without it being given as a way out... just explain that is was a joke gone wrong and you are deeply sorry for your actions. see how you go...

They get what they deserve. It is not a joke. I wonder why you want to "comfort" them! How old are you?
