Nope. It should be decriminalized, but not legalized.
Why?
There is no reason to jail someone for smoking or carrying nominal amounts of pot (I think the school zone exception is a good, realistic one) and it's obvious that this alone would make a major impact on prison populations as well as time and money wasted on arresting and trying these individuals..therefore, decriminalize it.
The thing with legalization is that it will inevitably end up as a bad thing. First of all, where will it come from? Are they just going to open up store fronts? Who's going to sell it? Will it require a license? How will they charge? Will the penalties for crimes committed while high be greater than those when not? Just like drinking (and driving)?
Take into consideration our tax system. It only takes one person calling it a vice for it to become ludicrously expensive or just all out banned...SUVs, gasoline, transfats, cigarettes, prescription drugs, alcohol...all have faced some sort of tax or campaigns to ban them altogether. What makes you think pot will be any different? It'll probably be the first to go! Seriously...look yourself in the mirror and say, "The government will not overtax this, or take it away from me". I'll buy the next bag if you can do it with a straight face. Heck, even some of the answerers want it to be taxed.
So, unless you want to start paying twice, maybe 3x what you do now, leave it alone, or at least hope for decriminalization.

Personally, I think it should be legalized. Nobody has killed anyone who was just under the influence of weed. I think up until the government finds a way to controll the sell of it and be able to tax not only the product, but the sellers as well, then it will not be legalized. Just think, one day, it will cost people about 7.50 to buy a nick bag.

Hemp was made illegal because it was poised to re-emerge on to the textile market at a very bad time, year 8 of the Great Depression. if hemp hadn't been stopped then it would have taken a piece of cotton's market share and, since it can grow anywhere, shifted the southern lock on textile production out of the region. They claimed it was because of the horrifying crimes people committed while under it's influence but that's been proven to be bull over the last 70 years.

I think pot should be legalized since all us have been led to believe we live in a free country. A free country is one where you can do whatever you want so long as you don't hurt anyone else. How can you have alcohol legal and not pot. This is typical hypocrisy by our corrupt government.

Well marijuana is a drug as is alcohol. I think there should be a tax on the drug. May cut some of the crime down over the trafficking of trying to get it into the U.S. Take the tax money from the selling of marijuana and apply to health care of those in need.

I do not care if it becomes legal,
But the problem with that is that it opens a "Pandora's box", once it becomes legal... others would soon follow.
Personally I would rather be around someone who is high than drunk any day of the week.

Ever wondered why it is illegal in the first place? Mexicans smoked it the border towns. Anglos were horrified so they pushed for prohibition. Now the whole world is a goddam prison because Anglos are prejudiced and provincial. How about that? Religious fanatics bent on world conquest.... isn't that what you all accuse Muslims of? well, wake up, the crusaders are on your government.
