Sleepmode, means your computer is still powered on, but the harddrive is basicly resting and not running, until you move the mouse or click on the keyboard.

Shutdown, is when the computer is complete powered down, it's off.

Hibernating a PC copies all of its ram contents to the hard drive and shuts it off. When the PC is rebooted that information is transfered right back into the ram and the PC is restored to its previous state. During a shutdown everything is unloaded from memory and completely closed out, when you turn the PC on everything has to be reloaded. Hibernation is nice for quick starts but can cause issues because the saved states of some programs cause problems. Probably the most common problem is when restoring from hibernation typically the computer's network connections won't work properly, there are ways to fix some of the problems, but some computers will be less friendly than others for using it.

Sleep mode goes into a hibernation you could say. When it's activated it powers down your computer but it doesn't turn it off. It powers down almost to conserve energy and battery life and if your on the ac adaptor it won't get the laptop hotter, it will help cool it down some.

Shutdown mode, is the mode when your ready to turn it off for the night. It shuts down your computer completely.
