Sometimes, sometimes not. It all depends on where the baby is positioned. It's really hard to hear it with just a stethoscope anyway, so the chances of you hearing it that way are pretty low. It's hard for me to even find it, and I know for sure what to listen for. At 20 weeks, your baby is still pretty small, and if they are facing the wrong way, you won't hear it. Do you know if you are having a boy or girl? Are you going to find out? Just interested!!!

Are you trying to hear it with a home stethoscope? I've only heard of the nurses using the doppler machine and ultrasound to hear heartbeats? Not sure, but it doesn't necessarily mean something is wrong if the baby is moving like he usually does, and your doctor hears a heartbeat at every visit. Good luck!

not till you are much farther along if at all. Most of the time you will only hear your own. The placenta is very thick and fluid filled. The "toco" that the Dr uses is an amplified stethoscope.

Nope. There is a whole lot of fluid and tissue for the sound to go through. Your baby is also curled up, so the best listening spots on her anatomy are not pressed against your uterine wall.

nope but you can probably hear your own pulse. you won't be able to hear your baby's heartbeat with a stethoscope during any part of your pregnancy.

It really depends on how your uterus is positioned. If you are bothered that you can't hear it call your doctor, he/she can give you a better idea and if he/she is worried they can check it out with the dopplar or maybe even an ultrasound

Not at 20 weeks...

When the baby is bigger and if her back is against your belly, you MIGHT be able to get it with a stethoscope....
