Downtown San Rafael along 4th St is the most cosmopolitan and egalitarian place in otherwise white, affluent Marin County.
Northern San Rafael, Terra Linda, is ugly suburban sprawl, but southern San Rafael, the older part is nice.

San Rafael is the biggest town in Marin County. It is about twenty minutes north of SF (over the golden gate bridge) It is really gorgeous there and all over Marin. Marin has the highest per capita income in the country- it is very nice. There is good shopping, (cute small boutiques in San Rafeal include Viva Diva and Bella) those are both on 4th street. During the spring and summer there is a good farmers market on 4th street every thursday evening. Other towns in Marin include: Fairfax- very hippyish, cute area, restaurants. San Anselmo- small, cute stores, has Comforts restaurant which is the best breakfast you can get in Marin in my opinion. Greenbrae/Kentfield- lots of homes, schools, bon air shopping center has longs, grocery store, cute clothing stores, small restaurants. Corte Madera- tons of shopping, restaurants, safeway, the village shopping center has nordstrom, macys, antrhopologie with abercrombie and true religion coming soon plus tons more, Mill Valley/Tiburon- lots of cute stores in their down town areas, nice homes. Sausalito- tourist attraction, old fishing town, gorgeous view of the city. Keep in mind that sounds like a lot of places but you can pretty much get anywere in Marin from San Rafael within twenty minutes. The city is great. I love it there. Great shopping downtown, haight street is fun, cow hollow has good restaurants and shopping- oh my gosh there is so much more!! anyway it's great here. I'm sure you will love it.

tax? as in sales tax? 8.25%
cost of living... high, but affordable compared to most of marin.
I've lived in san rafael for the last 7 years and lived in the north bay all my life. The "Canal" district is really the only 'not so good' part of town.
the town is kinda quaint, lots of restaurants, diverse mix of people.
e-mail me through here if you want... I'd be happy to answer specific questions for you.
