The pill is legal in Japan. It isn't widely prescribed but it is used. The current version being dispensed by Japanese doctors and pharmacies is what we in the U.S. would consider old. The dosage of hormones is high. The version you would likely be prescribed here in the U.S. is a much lower dose and is what is known as a tri-phasal. That means you get a relatively higher dose during the week you're ovulating, lower doses the week before and week after ovulation, and an iron tablet for the week you menstruate. It replaces the iron you lose through bleeding, and helps yuo not to forget to take your pill each day. Doctors have learned that the lower dose is sufficient to do the job. Studies have shown that the lower dosages work just as well and are safer. The safety part comes from putting less of a chemical into your body.
Because you're in the military, you should be seen my a military physician on-base. That physician should be able to prescribe the lower-dose pills, which the base pharmacy should be able to fill. It is best to verify that with someone in authority in your command. Also, contacting the U.S. state department, or the U.S. embassy in Japan couldn't hurt.

Birth control pills have been legal in Japan since sometime in the nineties. They were never illegal per se, just that the only legit reason for them to be prescribed was for a reason other than birth control-but it's still the same thing and I'm sure there was some "off-label"?! prescribing going on.

However the desirable "micro-pill" wasn't included in those other reasons for a birth control pill prescription as the full strength pills are used for all that. Japanese women just don't go in for them in any case. The military has it's own health care system, so it was never an issue.

They have to have means for American military personnel to get prescriptions whatever it is over there. Japanese citizens are restricted to laws if the pill isnt legal over there.
