A flat tax would be easier to calculate. It would put a lot of accountants out of business. I would not tax those under a certain annual income.

The Fair Tax is a better option. That way no one can avoid paying taxes. It would be a national sales that illegal immigrants and tax cheats would not be able to avoid. The flat tax is a 10 or 20 percent tax across the board. That would be an unreasonable burden on the poor. Read John Linder and Neil Boortz's book on the Fair Tax.

One good thing is that it will affect more people - more Americans will be in the same boat, tax percentage-wise.
Maybe there should be a law requiring every tax imposed by the government to be payable, at the same rate, by a majority of voting Americans. that way, a majority can't pass a popular tax that "socks it to" a small class of voters. I would apply this to marginal tax rates also - keep 'em the same for all.
That's an argument for a flat tax. there are many other arguments, for and against.

it takes an estimated 60cents per dollar received for the bureaucracy of the IRS. just getting rid of them would be worth it.
since I'm "out to lunch"do you deny that number, and do you deny that in your own statement "in smaller numbers "would not lower costs? that is out to lunch in my opinion. a complete overhaul of the system would rearrange; and knowing the entire govt; rename the system. Which is in effect getting rid of the IRS. A flat tax could be integrated into pay deductions to eliminate more of the problems the IRS has. and I never said it would not be replaced with another form of bureaucracy that wont cost money. it is the govt; but smart management could and will lower costs..... I would support a fair tax before a flat tax but then I live in a state without state taxes so that's not a surprise. that would significantly lower bureaucracy costs but there is no way a bloated govt would allow that.

Start with 10%
Look how well it has worked for Estonia. They hired Warren Buffet to design a tax system. And it works great.

capitano is out to lunch re his 60 cents on the dollar. the IRS would still be needed, in smaller numbers, to audit books to see that folks are not cheating and IRS would be needed to go after those who "forget" to write a check to the IRS. Not that the IRS is very good anymore at collecting delinquent taxes, upper management in the IRS is largely corrupt, likely bought off by weathly taxpayers.
