There are countries that beat us out in certain things, but we beat them out in other things.
As for pollution, I think America's track record is right up there at, or near, the top. There are lots of countries out there with much bigger pollution problems than ours.
As for life expectancy, we are in the top ten in the world -- and we'd probably be number one except that our diets and exercise habits aren't as good as they should be.
I think that, all in all, America is the best country in the world. It's not perfect by any means, and we undoubtedly have our problems.
But it's a country that many millions of people, including my own parents, have come to in order to start a new and free life -- often at risk of their own lives, as my parents did when they came here from Cuba on a makeshift raft.

There may be a country or two out there who have us beat in one or two catagories. One country may be better at traffic or pollution because their GNP is so small, no one can afford to own a car. Everyone raves about how everyone in Cuba has free medical care, but they don't realize the doctors and medical equipment over there are third rate and falling apart. Other countries may have less unemployment, but then so would we if it weren't for illegal immigrants.
Which brings me to the real test of which country is better. Until boat loads of people start fleeing from here to go to Haiti, I'm going to assume that we have the best country in the world.

America is the best country in the world. We are allowed to elect our leaders. If we do not like them, we vote them out at the next election. We can protest without fear. We can still walk around the streets without being armed. We haven't had a war on our soil since the Civil War. We have, however, got our problems like every other country. Our Healthcare system should be revised but probably never will due to money. Our children are being brainwashed into believing that they are entitled to brand named clothing, a brand new BMW when they turn 16 and spending money or a credit card on demand. Yes, we have our problems but the USA is still the best place to live.

It's the greatest nation in the land. If you're adaptable/flexible there are probably dozens of countries you could live in happily. Yes this is a good country, but there are plenty of others.
EDIT: I found the traffic control and pollution to be much worse in Rio, Sao Paulo, Buenos Aires, Cairo, Bangkok and probably a few other places than it is here......

Of course, it is imperative in our media and colleges to teach our youth that America is just SOOO evil, but there is a basic Marxist motivation for that. People who actually spend time in other countries and see what they are really about and discover that the US is the only country to be ashamed of itself or even pretend to be in the game for anything other than self preservation, those people know the real deal.

It's a lot easier to manage a population of 2 million; a government of less people than NYC.
All things being considered, I'll stick with US>

all countries have good and bad. American gets singled out alot because they have a history of overthrowing democratically elected governments, and supporting military juntas that overthrow democratically elected governments. a good country does not occupy another, I don't care how unpopular that sounds.

If it wasn't becoming Mexico so quickly! There a few things I don't like about it... The crime, and the judicial system. Politically I hate it, otherwise it is good!
