"Gay" is a term applied to some one who is attracted to people of the same sex. Some gay women would rather you call them lesbians but it's all the same thing. It's really just a matter of preference.

I'm not gay so myabe i'm being politically incorrect, but I've heard many lesbians refer to themselves as gay. Gay is just another term for homosexual, and the last time I checked, lesbians were homosexual.
Even if your friend is technically right, I think she's being a little nitpicky.

That's a gay question - j/k. As you can see, you can use the term 'gay' for anything. I've heard a comedian who happened to be a lesbian use the term 'gay' about herself.

It depends on what context you're using the word. Gay can be used to describe the sexual preference of a male or female that is homosexual, and it can also be used to describe any person, place or thing that is odd or displeasing.
1) Elton John is openly gay. or Melissa Etheridge is openly gay.
2) That is the gayest hat I have ever seen. or Dude, you're being gay, stop it.
The two are not mutually exclusive, so you must be aware of whom you are speaking to and who can hear what you are saying, or read what you are writing. Hope this helps.

No, gay is synomous with homosexual and can be properly applied to either gender. It is more typical for people to use gay for men and lesbian for women.

I've known plenty of women who describe themselves as "gay."
Personally, think "Homosexual" is the only accurate word.
"Gay" means "happy," not having to do with sexual orientation.
"Lesbian" means a person from the Greek isle of Lesbos. (It came to refer to homosexual women only because of the ancient poet Sappho of Lesbos, who wrote poems about her love of women.)
"Homosexual" on the other hand, literally means, "same sex," so that's the only truthful term.
Except, of course, for "human being."

"Gay" is a unisex term that refers to any homosexual. "Lesbian" refers only to homosexual women. You were right and fell free to laugh back at your friend.
