In The U.S.
On a local level it is a true democracy, each vote is counts and is counted in the final tally.
*So if your local government is a dictatorship then that must be what the people their wanted.
On a Federal level it is a Republic where each person in each state votes and once over 51% are for one side all electoral votes for the state go for that party. Then the electoral college elects the president. Which is why some Presidents became Pres without winning the popular vote.
That is why the U.S. is called a Democratic Republic

I'm not a nationalistic person by any means, nor do I like President Bush (per se). Come to think of it I don't really like any politician. But come on, pal. Do you even know what a dictatorship is? It is totalitarian rule. Normally by one man. No matter what the press or other spinsters say, President Bush is not a dictator. The system of checks and balances between the three branches of government (judicial - executive - legislative) is firmly in tact. It may not be running smoothly - but has it ever? Read the constitution.
If there ever came a day when President Bush or any other president declares himself or herself Supreme Commander, then you can start to ask this question seriously. Until then, think for yourself.
Furthermore - we are not a democracy. We are a democratic republic - there is a big difference. True democracy is anarchy's hot cousin - but not what you really want. A democratic republic is much like what Rome was before she became the Empire.

No, ours is NOT a democracy.
However if a dictator DID want to take power, he would look for a democracy in which he could be elected and then refuse to give up power.
You obviously feel put upon by the Bush administrations, and I sympothise with your pain.
I don't agree with it, but I do understand where you are coming from.
Unfortunately you are no more perceptive or part of the solution than the hundreds of like minded conservative hate mongers that troll here also.
You are all, both conservative and liberal, hate mongers and you don't contribute solutions, don't discuss real issues and don't debate values...you just hate.
I pity you, both conservative and liberal that are so bound up in your hatred that you cannot be part of the solution.

It's an illusion of democracy. The average citizen has nothing to do with the daily functuions of the executive branch. But we do have a bit more sway with those we put in congress.

Our president understands that the senate's bill only dictates the failure of our efforts in Iraq - a form of betrayal since it tells our enemies that our troops are fate to lose. It will bargain the future security of US and damage the reputation of US, which already ruined from VN War. It also tells all enemies of US that if they use Harass Tactic in war with US, we will lose sooner or later! We have voted for the right man in war time!

It depends on what country you are talking about.
In the US, we are a democratic republic. We means, we (the citizens) vote for leaders who operate within specific limits imposed by the Constitution.
Contrary to Bush's assertions and wishes, the President does not have the powers of a dictator under the Constitution.

There are supposed to be checks and balances to inhibit dictatorial executive behavior. Too bad the last Congress absolved itself from that duty, gave away the constitution, and replaced it with The patriot Act.

No - and everybody who thinks so obviously slept through their US Government classes in high school.
Cora - for a 'top answerer' you really should at least stick a little closer to facts.
