It irks the heck out of me! I see these players put their heart and soul into tying up a player with the ball, only to have the "possession arrow" go to the other team. Why not just have the two players do what they do in the NBA in a jump-ball situation...jump up for the freakin' ball?

Bill: I'm almost 30 and this is YAHOO ANSWERS...if I have a question, I'll ask it. It's quite rude to insult someone when they ask a question. Maybe you should attend an ettiquette class.

First, it speeds the game up by not having teams line up after each tied up ball. Second, the teams are well aware of what the possession arrow is at all times. Third, the rules were changed several years ago where the team with the possession if they have "the arrow" they get no advantage with the shot clock.

So how is that any different from a player putting their heart and soul into tying up a player, only to have their seven foot center win the ball back?

The fact that you ask this question shows your youth. The jump ball was taken out of college athletics in the early 1990's. The reasoning was that the game needed to be sped up for television coverage and because the officials were having difficulty throwing the ball high enough and straight enough consistently.

To stop and have a jump ball took too much time. It used to be done in the past.
