Foreign policy.

It's our practice of telling other countries what to do, and trying to enforce our particular beliefs on everyone else, that prompts hatred.

People just doing their thing (without bragging about it or trying to enforce it on others) rarely triggers significant emotion.

Foreign Policy!

You can't force the West's way of life on a people who have lived and breathed their religous cause for thousands of years. They have been taught since birth to oppose any kind of occupation.

They are throwing modern day missle assaults and forced West thinking on a people who could have walked out of Jesus's time today and you wouldn't see them any different than they are!

If a giant force invaded America and they told everyone that they were going to have to live this way or that or else, how many American's would fight to preserve our way of life?

You really are not going to sit there and try to convince me that some Arab in a cave was responsible for the worst attack on America are you?

And as for the Governments story about the 9/11 hijackers being from Saudi Arabia, why then would they sell them our Port Security and move Halliburton there?

These people are insane

Can anyone say oil - or more importantly ISRAEL!

Foreign policy... which has influenced and interfered with Middle East politics WAY before the first gulf war, by the way.

- Suez Crisis
- Overthrow of legitimate Iranian govt. in 1953
- Support of Israel

Just a few examples....

Right or wrong, our interventionist policies have pissed off a lot of people. At the core, they just want the West to stay out of internal politics.

Radical Islamic terrorists are most resentful of the US' foreign policy and position as superpower because they want that for themselves. But radical Islamic terrorist masterminds also do not like the thought of liberal Western influences--equality for women, religious freedom, government balance of power, etc--spreading to their region and interfering with their hold on power.

They want their religion and laws imposed on the world. Not just the US, but the entire world. While it may seem grandiose you have to remember that the Ottoman Empire covered a good portion of the civilized world and thats what they feel they are entitled to again. There is no placating the extremists, not by Democrats, or Republicans, they want what they want and so we are going to have to find a way to control and contain them. But their way of thinking has nothing to do with what we do or don't do here, or which party is in power, or the use of that strange "embolden" word, nothing makes them bolder or quieter, all they want is domination.

cora your a smart guy but I believe dead wrong on this one,
foreign policy is a contributor, but before even gulf war 1 we had problems with the middle east.
I have talked personally with people from Jordan, Pakistan, India, Iran and others, and people there hate the western lifestyle, they hate that what women are allowed to get away with ( in their words ).

They hate our freedom to embark on illegal wars. They hate our freedom to disregard geneva conventions. They hate our freedom to take over their land and give it to the Jews.

Therefore, they hate our freedoms. Oh wait....
