If the assistants are chatting to each other I smile sweetly and say "I'm so sorry to interrupt your fascinating conversation but I'm trying to contributing to your wages. It's a shame you don't seem to be interested".
If it's a single assistant get as close as you can then say "I'm invading your personal space as you haven't shown any interest in invading mine". Then, in both cases, if you know you can get what you want elsewhere -smile and walk away. That really winds them up. If it's a department store and they've really annoyed you - go to customer service and report them and insist the customer service person accompanies you back to the counter. You'll get at least an apology and possibly even some concessions - it does work!

If it was only for a short time I would probably wait, but if it went on too long I walk out and buy what I wanted elsewhere.

If sombody was served before me that shouldn't be, I would object to the person being served, if the shop assistant was ignoring me.

I am special because I know what it's like to be on the other side. I'm a cashier at a grochery store. There are times when I don't realize someone is there, or that they are trying to get my attention. They must think I'm ignoring them. But I'm not. I just don't see them. So when I go other places and feel ignored I remember what it's like to be on the other side. I tell myself they probably just don't realize I'm here. So I speak a little louder, say "excuse me" or something like that. I try not to get too mad though.

Uh i hate those rude cows with too much make-up chatting away looking at you like you are gone out because you have enough manners to wait a few seconds, If they take the P, ill slam it on the counter.

I had this happen to me. I was waiting at a counter, while 2 people behind the
counter kept on talking and giving me nasty--why don't you get lost--looks. A
man came up and they became all smiles and started to wait on him. I said,
"excuse me. I was here first and you will wait on me first. If not, I will be talking to
the manager." Boy, were they mad at me. I felt sorry for the guy.

I have been known to set the items on the counter and say "I guess I'll go elsewhere where they wait on customers."
