Hey all...
I got a new job! Today I have to put my letter of resignation in to my old boss. He's a major jerk and I know that he is going to be pretty angry with me when I tell him I'm leaving. What time is the best time of day to do this? I was thinking maybe right before I go home for the day because he will be less of a threat to me, but I wanted to see what other people thought.

EDIT: Let me just add in that I do intend to give them (almost) two weeks notice. They need me at the new job on April 11th.

Congrats on your new job.....hell, I would do it now...you don't want him to keep you after hours (you won't get paid for your time). The last place I put my resignation in, I went to the bosses office and knocked on the door (it was open), told him I needed a few minutes of his time and had my letter in my hand. I explained to him that I was leaving verbally, handed him the letter and it was over. He did appreciate me coming in to talk with him, I think he considered me to be brave, showed chivalry. I didn't like my boss either so it didn't matter whether he liked it or not. I knew it was over. Good luck in your new position.

Usually its 2 weeks however this is just a curtosy and in no way a MUST. Try and make it a week and a half if you know you are going to suffer.
The end of the day would be best or on the weekend so they have time to cool off but with a jerk for a boss unless you do it the very last day (which isn't a good idea) you will probably suffer through some rude comments and meanial stupid tasks.
good luck at your new job.

Congrats on the new job!
I would wait until there's about an hour left in the work day. Hand him your letter, tell him it's been great working there, but you are looking to pursue some other opportunities. He can ask where you are going to work, but you are not obligated to tell him if you don't want to.
If you do in during the last hour, it's close enough to the end of the day that you could survive, but enough time to talk with him if he wants to discuss something with you. (That way, you don't get out of there late!)
I would give it to him on a Friday as well. That way, he has time to absorb it over the weekend.
Good luck and congratulations!

Timing would probably hinge on when you are resigning. Are you quitting immediately or giving two weeks notice? If you're quitting on the spot, I would say end of day, buit if you're giving two weeks, do it first thing in the morning. If the boss wants you gone right away, then you have the rest of the day to yourself!

Two weeks before starting the new job...for courtesy's sake. ;)
Your boss then has the option of letting you work the two weeks, or give you a cheque in lieu.
HOWEVER...in most jurisdictions, you can walk-out the door without advanced notice, if you are leaving for a "better" job.
Now that that is out of the way...end of the day would be my choice.

I would give the letter of resignation this afternoon, maybe an hour before you get off work. With my experience, it is better to wait until Friday afternoon, so if you can wait, your boss will have the weekend to cool down.

ASAP. That's only common courtesy. They need to start training someone else for your position. Even if your boss is squirrelly, they still hired you and gave you a paycheck every week. Congratulations on your new job!

I don't really think the time of day would matter. If you give it at the end of the day, there will be issues the next day you come in.

right before lunch , so if he gives you the boot and doesn't want you for your last 2 weeks , you still can enjoy the rest of the day.

I wouldn't wait until the last minute, but sometime late this afternoon is appropriate. Good luck and congratulations.
