O is always -2

so in NO3- ==> N(O-2)3- >> N(?)(O-6)-

so you have N(?)(O-6)- the O give -g but the entire thing still has -1 charge

+x-6 =-1 ==> x = -1 + 6 ==> x = +5

the NO you got right

You're right. In NO3-, N=5, O= -2. 5 + 3(-2) = -1.
In NO, N=2 and O= -2.
H is alwas +1 except in hydrides like NaH, where it is -1. O is always -2, except in peroxides like H2O2, where it is -1. The oxidation numbers in a compound add up to 0. The oxidation numbers in an ion add up to the charge on the ion.

The oxidation number can be obtained from a valency table (i.e wikipedia or webelements.com has the valency) for elements and from using your nous. You can also use the more common valency of the element to calculate the valency of the more unfamiliar elements.

For example in a nitrate the oxygen atom (in most cases) has a valency of -2, therefore the valency of nitrogen is given by

N + (3*-2) = -1

N - 6 = -1

Nitrogen in this case has a valency of +5

For nitrogen

N= +5

For nitrogen monoxide, oxygen has a valency of -2 and therefore the valency is

N - 2 = 0

N= 2

With practice the calculation of valency becomes easier. For example the oxidation numbers in a compound add up to 0. The oxidation numbers in an ion add up to the charge on the ion.

you can get them by considering about the structure and by the thing that you had given it's easy. in NO3-, definilely oxidation number of oxygen is -2. and the sum of the oxydation numbers of oxygen and nitrogen should be equal to -1. if we think that oxidation number of nitrgen is x
x+(-2*3)= -1
x =+5
in NO. the oxydation number is +2
i hope that helped. good luck. oxydation numbers are easy!!!

in the previous Deathly Hallows, Harry's and Voldemort's wands had feathers from Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix. in case you may keep in mind, Harry lost his unique wand in part a million.
