Lily of the valley but it will spread and can take over an area. A real beauty is pulmonaria or lungwort which will bloom in early spring and stay bushy for the rest of the year. Columbines will do great in shade as will bleeding hearts and their foliage after bloom is really pretty. There are also foxgloves but these are a biennial and may not bloom the frist year but will bloom in the second year and often will reseed themselves. Hostas will always grow in the shade but I am not a hosta lover. Ferns can be fabulous particularly maidenhair fern...lovely foliage. Hope these suggestions help.

OMG!!! I live in Indiana and just mulched and weeded my shade garden this past weekend. For our zone 5, I highly recommend: Hostas, Japanese Painted Ferns, Helleborus, Purple Palace Huchera, Bleeding Hearts, and Astilbe for some great color and variety year round.

Check out Munchkin Nursery in southern IN for other great shade garden ideas. :) Happy Gardening in '07!

There are many....aucubas, cleyera, fatsia, fatshedera, gardenias, hollies, hydrangeas, mahonias, osmanthus, and viburnums. Azaleas will do well in afternoon shade.
