I don't know if 'chips' is the right word, but I think you'll know what I mean. I have 256 RAM now, but I would like to upgrade in the near future.

I believe it is 2GB. But the best way to get the specific answer you need is to go to Dell Support then memory and they will tell you. If there are multiple versions of the 4500 you will need to give them your service tag number (on the back or bottom of the machine).

If you intend to purchase generic memory you will need to know the configuration required by the machine. You may be able to extract that information from the shipped configuration which Dell can supply with the service tag number.

Hi. This site http://www.memoryx.net/dimension4500.html shows the unit to have 2 banks on memory. It shows up to 512 MB of DDR266 per slot. Memory is usually referred to as 'sticks'.

If it's a desktop it depends on how many slots there are. (Not sure about laptops) You're gonna have to to open it up and look for the memory that's already in there. Once you locate it, you'll see how many slots are availble.
