The organizer should provide you with a program of the event. What you do is work closely with DJ and other officials to make sure that parts of the event are ready to go on stage, and you announce the in a manner that is common to this particular dance event. Read the last names and names of the dance pieces to yourself a few minutes ahead of time whenever you get a chane - those may be tricky. Organizers should also provide you with "padding" text whenever there is a delay. Ask for it if they didn't. Usually it is thanking the sponsors, recognizing the teachers and organizers, advertizing next event and so on. You should practice speaking with a microphone. The key is you will have to speak slower than you would in a normal conversation. Make everything sound like a treat and something exciting that you want to see, but don't overdo it. God luck. I'm sure you will enjoy it.

Public speaking comes natural for some, others-not so much. Many people go to college and get degrees in communication in order to do things like this.
First of all, RELAX. If you are nervous, you will appear stressed and you will talk too quickly and stutter over your words. Perhaps there is some place you could practice? Try getting together some friends to be a practice audience. Work on speaking clearly and at an easy pace.
Pay attention to your body movements. Stand tall, back up straight with your feet in a loose 5th position--not as wide as 4th (ask a ballet dancer if you don't know). Don't lock your knees while you are standing (this can result in passing out).
Keep your arms comfortably at your sides, and use your hands to gesture only occasionally (don't gesture too much it gets distracting).
Keep your head up and eyes forward, don't look at the floor.

Use a strong voice, from the diaphragm. Use a good even tone and gentle inflections. If you are just introducing the dances, keep your speaking to a minimum and encourage the audience to clap for the dancers as they take the stage. If you are acting as "fill time" between dances, speak about fun things that the dancers have done throughout the year. Did they dance at any charity events? Do they have a competition team? Did the team place at any competitions? Are they headed to nationals? Find out any interesting stories that you could share with the audience about the dancers and how hard they have work this year. Recognize any dancers that are graduating from high school and share their future plans. If you are desperate for more "fill time" try pulling a dancer that has just performed and interview them- so to speak- about how the show is going and how they love to dance.

One last thing, find out what type of microphone you will be using. Will you be at a podium mic? Will you be holding a handheld mic? Will you be wearing a lapel mic or a headset mic? Find out from the sound technician what kind of mic you will have and find out how to use it properly-if you don't know already. This is an important thing that many people don't think about.

Good luck!
