yes, and a great learning tool for database engineers working on much larger databases.

I actually use access as my backend for my web server.

Where I work, we use MS Excel for simple spreadsheets and Oracle as our database. We did have an MS Access database once for tracking bugs in our development but we often found that we spent more time working the bugs out of the MS Access database when multiple users were trying to work with the file. I'd recommend looking at the Oracle Standard Edition One (not free but cost $149/user, 5 user minimum) or Oracle Express Edition (free but limited to 4GB of data, 1GB of RAM, and 1 CPU).

It depends on your job field mostly. I work at a university and I use Word and Excel all the time. I prepare spreadsheets and data charts so it's just better to use Excel for that. I consider Access the most popular and best known database system but I do not use it much on my job.
