I was thinking about downloading limewire but was wondering whether or not it is legal and could i get charged a fine?

I would not recommend downloading limewire since it promotes the illegal downloading of music, computer programs, movies, etc. Your best bet would be to purchase the music and/or videos from other venues such as Napster, The ITunes Store, and many others. I know in the ITunes Store songs are .99 cents and albums are usually $9.99. If you decide to download limewire, good luck. The only advice I can give you is to turn off your file sharing to others. It isn't illegal to have lime wire, it isn't illegal to download items in the public domain from limewire, or any other filesharing network. It is when you download music, movies, and other copyrighted material that you are committing a crime. If you stick to just downloading recipies and such, and public domain music, you should be fine. Try peerguardian to block people who may want to prosecute you.

If you use the FREE version you could get charged thousands of dollars for illegally downloading music. Check here for an article about it:

Other sites, such as iTunes, Yahoo Music Unlimited, (the new) Napster, and WalMart.Com are legal, because you have to pay for them and the artists get paid from the revenue of those sites.

It is 100% illegal. When you download music from it you do not have the license to play the music you download. You can get an unlimited fine ( Chosen by the company you copyrighted from ) and up to 15 years imprisonment.

well....the sharing in limewire is legal. however, to download songs is illegal. So...it's hard to say. There is no charge to use limewire...but to have to limewire-pro...there is charge.

i think it is illegal because you are downloading songs without paying for them. You can use itunes or walmart to download songs legally. plus i hear that limewire is full of viruses that will slow down your computer.

The actual programme is legal but the stuff you download of it is illegal because it infringes copyright laws. Only if it is your own material then it can be classed as legal.
The chances of getting caught using it are slim.

This is strange; so hang on. It is legal to have LimeWire prog. on yer puter...but its illegal to download copyrighted material....just like its legal to own a gun but illegal to murder.
