From my understanding, it's a when a student takes a year or so off from studies to travel, volunteer or work. It can occur before one starts post secondary school, or in between years of study.
There are many reasons why people take a gap year. One is to work to save money before starting school (either post secondary or graduate.) Another is to take a break from studies and travel the world... post secondary school requires a lot of work and stress and a year off helps to refresh the student before they return to more studies.
I encourage taking a gap year... because once you are done school and enter the working world, it's much harder to get that much time off without disruption. It extends the time you take to get your degree but it's worth it.

A gap year is also, in the UK, the year between finishing high school (or the UK equivalnt thereof) and starting university. People use this time to travel abroad or find a university if they plan to continue their education, as not everyone goes on to university.

Leap year, and it has to do with the calendar lining up with the earth's motion around the sun. I don't recall the details, but the calendar would be off somehow altogether without it.
Gap year- never heard of it. We don't do or call anything by that name in the U.S. LOL, sorry, I just realized I didn't go back to the main page like I meant to before I started answering questions again!

Taking a year ff to explore the world etc...before university/college. It's mainly a European thing. Americans could do with one, generally we jut go straight to college and then it's off to work.

it's taking a year off from school before going on to college or university (depending on where you live). after 13 years of school, some kids want a year to do something else. they travel or work or whatever.

I'VE NEVER HEARD OF A GAP YEAR....I'VE HEARD OF LEAP YEAR. THAT IS EVERY 4 YEARS WE HAVE AN EXTRA DAY IN OUR CALENDERS. THE REASON FOR THIS IS THAT OUR CALENDERS ARE NOT EXACT, FOR EVERY YEAR THIER IS 1 QUARTER OF A DAY EXTRA, I BELEAVE THIS MAY HAVE TO DO WITH DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME.
