We will know in about five years, but so far every prediction of the world ending has turned out to be false, and Bayesian reasoning suggests that this prediction will turn out to be false also.

posted this for someone else who asked this question...
it is a common misconception that they believed that the world would end. life moves in cycles and around every 6480 years(i believe but this probably isn't the exact time frame) there is some sort of cataclysmic event, if you go back 6480 we are told that this is when civilisation was formed, roughly, go back another 6480 the plystacene(misspelled) era ended and 6480 years before that the preceeding era ended, this is all verifiable even tho i'm getting the numbers and names wrong. scientists can trace this bach about 25000 years and every time something happens. so 2012 is the conclusion of the current 6480 and also the conclusion of the 25000+yr cycle of the zodiacs, we will next be entering the aquarian age which is associated w/ attaining higher conciousness. the mayans seem to know a lot and if anyone says well why did they die it is b/c the belief is that we are all source energy that are eternal beings, our dna is essentially energy, and you can research that. the long and short of it is there will be a 2013 but maybe (and hopefully) we will all be better off by them. we are in the process of gaining this higher conciousness now, how often have we or others said there isn't enough time in the day or that children are growing up faster now than ever before, it's all relative
The year 2012 will also be marked by the near-Earth crossing of the Asteroid Eros, Superbowl XLVI, and the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth, just as a tidbit

I will attach a link but there is so much information available on the Dec.21, 2012 prediction. There have been numerous prophets who have predicted 2012 as an apocolypse, but the Maya one is the one most people hear about. I spend about a month a year in Central America and have studied it fairly in depth while at ruin sites.
On Dec.21/12 the earth and sun will be in a straight line in the very centre of the Milky Way, and it will also be the end of the 'period of the 5th sun' and onto a new cycle with many new 'realisations' of the universe, beings, etc. The Maya don't see time as a linear thing like we do, but as giant circles overlapping themselves. I am taking a lot of information from this website (my memory is fuzzy as I haven't been down south for about 10 months now) so I'll just give you the link. Hope I helped, cheers!

It's when the old era Mayan Calendar ends and they never started the one for their new era which would begin at the same time. You'll notice that they had such a great talent for seeing the future that they died out. I have a Barnes & Noble calendar that ends in Feb of 2008. Maybe we should start a rumor that the world will end then. Whatcha think?

The world is not going to end in 2012. The world is going to begin then, as it does every day when a human being decides to live his/hers life to the best of his/hers intentions and sentiments.

I believe that date (it's like November something or other in that year) is based on Aztec lore (or something other people of long ago). It's apparently when their calendar runs out. Google it if you want the entire story. I personally don't believe it, but I'm sure there are plenty of people that do.
Sorry...it was Mayan, not aztec.

Again I don't understand!? How can you put a data on it, down to the day? if your theory is right then you should have no problem telling me when the light bulb will go in my room. Otherwise you have just wasted my time on a myth.

people are always predicting when "The end of the world" will be here - no one really knows. It will come unexpectingly. It will probably NOT end in 2012.
