Nope.
We're not afraid of the rest of the world; we have an aversion to having terrorists fly planes into buildings and kill innocent people. Much like the Brits, the Spanish.......

that's funny. I did a paper in high school called paranoia, got an A+ too. Yes I do think we are paranoid. Every time something happens we freak out. Lets see there was Sputnik *sp?* there was Y2K, my family couldn't even buy water it was all sold out, there was the anthrax thing, my neighbors were taping up their windows and boarding doors, there's all sorts of things, and we never seem to take a rational look at things. I don't know, I like being here in America, it's good, but we're very young and haven't learned a lot yet.

Most Americans are not paranoid. In fact, we are so powerful a lot of us tend to be arrogant and shouldn't.

But we do have a minority on the far right who does think everyone is out to get them--and are so obnoxious that attitude usually becomes a self-fufilling prophecy. Unfortunately one of them happens to be president at the moment.

Only our liberals are paranoid. The rest of us will kick anyones butt who even attempts to set foot on our land. As for foreigners, who cares what they think, there is not one out there to be afraid of.

There are two currents of thought in the U.S.
One is aware of the strength of the U.S. and believes our system of government is worth preserving.
The other is defeatist and does not think the U.S. has or should have any advantages over any other country.
The contradiction you mention is because of these two currents of thought.
