Isn't it frustrating, when after the question is closed, and the asker puts up some ignorant unfounded comment to the answer you gave. You have no way to rebuttal or give a counterpoint, because he has blocked himself from receiving IMs or e-mails. I mean what is the point. I can understand private info, that that is not an issue, no one cares, at least I don't, I just want a chance to rebuttal. Anyway, you can set up your profile to keep that stuff hidden and still allow e-mails.
I know this site is suppose to strictly Q&A, but you know as well as I, 90% of the people on here treat it like an open forum. Which I am not complaining, I do as well, obviously, and I love the open discussion, exchange of ideas. I just think if your going to through absurd comments out there you should not be afraid of someone's civilized counterpoints.
Your thoughts on blocked IM's and e-mails.

Who cares!!! I think people are far to anally retentive about the "quality" of their answers, or the sanctity of their site or some such crap. This is pure entertainment, if you have an ego attachment to it, then YOU have the problem!

Everyone seems to have a valid point. I think IM and e-mail being blocked is because of the trolls. When Yahoo first set up Answers everything was pretty much wide open and it was great. However, when controversy (especially in the religion and spirituality section) reared its head, things got ugly, fast.
Quite a few e-mail boxes were jam packed with ugly, vengeful, threatening missives. Some deserved, but mostly not. A lot of us were witness to such vengeful verbal retaliations, and took action to block our IMs and e-mails.
However, if you must post a thought regarding a snide remark there is always the option of using the Add/View Comments directly under Best Answer.
Yes, it is frustrating not being able to defend yourself against smart remarks. I feel z0plax made a good comment about some of this frustration is about ego. But, it remains frustrating all the same.

It can be annoying for the exact reasons you state. But because of the few who would abuse it i can understand why some choose not to have emails sent to them. (OR IM's) It's a double edged sword basically.
Then there is also the fact that some of those who don't allow IM's or emails just don't care enough about discussing the topic and would rather just say their peace and not have anyone be able to give an opposing opinion. Those are the ones that are most annoying to me.

I totally agree. free speech is a right, but nobody asks a question to hear someones smart little comments. don't make an ignorant comment then be afraid to handle the heat that comes with making it. can't handle the heat, get out the kitchen. =) have a nice day

I block IMs because of the virus risk. I block my email because I do not want to leave an open door for jerks and trolls.
I know this also blocks nice people from contacting me too, but my personal safety is more important to me.

I agree completely, in fact, just this morning, for those very reasons, I unblocked my e-mail.
In my defence, I blocked e-mail years ago when I first signed up to Yahoo and didn't realize until today that it was still blocked.

I think that most people already get too much e-mail and IM and don't want to open themselves up for more. This is just a quick and neat way to say what you want and run.

Maybe some of your frustration is from being in a forum which inhibits conversation. You might want to save yourself aggravation and medical bills by switching to a blog.

It his question after all. I've had the opposite experience, having had people say my legitimate questions stupid, without actually providing an answer.
I don't know why this is, as I have answered hundred of questions, including saving someone's life
People are just plain rotten, I guess

Some people seem to invest too much ego in this medium.
There's no good reason to provide useless comments, only petty ones. That kind of crap is best ignored.
