If they are both gay and have a civil partnership, then one becoming a woman will severe that partnership if they decide to change their birth certificate (which they can do after 2 years of being full time as a woman - and vice versa) in the UK. Then they can get married as a normal couple as it becomes man and woman. If it is between a man and a woman, and the man changes sex to a woman and changes their birth certificate, it breaks the marriage as you cant have a lesbian marriage, and so the only way to get back together would be to have a civil partnership as lesbians.
The Gender Recognition Act came into action in 2004, you can look it up on the government site and read the rules. In order to get your birth cert changed, you have to have lived as the other sex for 2 years, and provided reports by 2 psychiatrists that agree with your ts status. The operation is not required but makes things easier in getting the change of cert. From then on, you have all the rights and privlegies of any other of that sex, and naturally, you lose all the rights and privlegies that you had as your original sex. So the answer is no to your question, there is no way to keep married if one decides to change sex.

yes i saw a show about it on the learning channel, they were still legally married, having a sex change doesn't change the fact that you are still biologically a man (in this case)

That relies upon. If the transsexual companion legally adjustments his or her gender, and the regulation would not understand comparable-intercourse marriages, the marriage would be void. If he or she would not, for despite reason, the marriage remains valid; If he or she does, and comparable intercourse marriage is criminal the place the couple stay, the marriage remains valid. that's a tragic, yet genuine, actuality that ninety 5% of all marriages the place one companion is transsexual bring about divorce or separation.

I don't know, but it would be better if they each had a sex change. That way they could remain a traditional couple.
The body parts of each could be attached to the other, making the job much simpler.
