1. Citizen Kane (1941, Orson Welles)--In the American film industry, Citizen Kane represented a quantum leap. In almost every aspect of filmmaking--screenwriting, acting, cinematography, editing, music, and sound, Citizen Kane was revolutionary. Of course, it took someone from outside Hollywood to make such a film. If it wasn't made, the art of the movies in the Unied States would have been set back by ten years.
2. Seven Samurai (1954, Akira Kurosawa)--Most action films today focus on extravagent, but ultimately empty and unsatisfying set pieces. This action films has action galore, but the focus is on the little scenes that highlight the simultaneously symbiotic and antagonistic relationship between the farmers and the samurai. Kurosawa's film features masterful storytelling and virtuosic technique.
3. 8 1/2 (1963, Federico Fellini)--Many films have been made about the movie industry, or even the nuts and bolts of producing a film. However, 8 1/2 delves into the actual creative process, exploring how a director uses memories, dreams. Heady stuff for sure, and entertaining to boot.
