In the state of Minnesota, the legislature is proposing tax increases on income tax, cigarette tax, gasoline tax, car title fees, license renewal fees, basically an increase to every state tax and fee you can think of. I would like to know why all this extra money is necessary. Over the next two years our state is budgeted to spend about $34 billion and bring in about $36 billion in revenue (at current tax levels). This is a $2 billion budget surplus or nearly 5% of total expenditures over the same time period. Why should we be increasing revenue through higher taxes when we already will collect more than enough money to fund the state?

Regardless of the reason, if I were you I wouldn't expect a revenue increase.

Tax rate hikes have often shown to lead to lower tax revenues.

Because Massachusetts governor Deval Patrick does not like the old official car, he want a new Cadillac, a $27000.00 plus for new curtains in his office, and $72000.00 salary for his wife private secretary. Because the house speaker Nancy Pelosi does not want the old plane which was provided for the former speaker, she wants a bigger one so she can feel safer. Because John Edwards and Hillary Clinton want a universal health plan for everybody if either of them becomes the President of the United State next year.
