We invaded Iraq for 3 reasons:
Bush wanted to go in the history books as"Great."
Cheney wanted to enrich Haliburton (but he won't see a dime, nope, no way, he won't personally profit, he wouldn't do such a thing.).
Rumsfeld wanted permanent bases in the area.
What some of the people who answered seem to have forgotten is that the UN WAS engaged in inspections, and finding dust and cobwebs.

Iraq did nothing to the United States to provoke an attack. Bush and Cheney were planning on attacking Iraq 15 months earlier and would have attacked Iraq regardless of 911.
The U.S. can't go everywhere and turn other countries governments on their heads just because the U.S. doesn't agree with how they run their country.
There are plenty of countries that mistreat their people. For instance China, Iran, India, Korea. You don't see Bush rushing to their aid! China loped a missle over the United States and you didn't hear a peep out of Bush! Iran chants, "Death to America" and we give them $ 75,000 million dollars a year in Foreign Aid. We give Foreign Aid to many of our enemies, while we let our Veterans suffer. Let our education system fail and ignore our elderly needs. While bleeding the middle class of tax dollars.
Iraq is a country a little bigger the the state of Texas. Bush though it would be an easy knock over then steal their oil, not so. Just today Saudi Arabia's King is turning on him! Pretty soon Bush will be in a war with the whole Middle East.
It's well known and documented that Bush was wrong to go into Iraq and reduce that country to rubble and displace the millions Iraqi civilians and cause the deaths of 650,000 Iraqi civilians.
Bush doesn't know what he's doing! He creates democracy by taking power away from the Sunnis and giving it to the Sheits. When the Sunnis have been in power in that area for over 400 years. It would be like going into the deep south of America in the 1960's and throwing the white people out of office and putting the blacks in power. Civil war would break out. That's what happened in Iraq, Civil war broke out.
Bush deneys and lies and cover ups the truth and gets caught. It's amazing anyone believes him at all. He's made America look like a bunch of CHICKEN POOPS!

Most democrats went along with Bush's lies about attacking Iraq, these same democrats sided with the republicans in backing Bush because they all believed all the misinformations and lies the Bush administration concocted for Bush to invade Iraq. Of course, now everybody have found out about the truth. Loyal to the end, even the first to answer your question a "loyal-bushie", still believes good old dubya.

They did not make any recent act of agression. The reasons Congress gave are set forth in the AUMF. Specifically:
* Because Iraq attacked Kuwait in 1990
* Because Iraq promised to behave after Kuwait
* Because Iraq apparently hasn't been behaving itself.
* Because intelligence agencies think Iraq may have WMDs.
* Because Congress thinks Iraq may have WMDs.
* Because the US thinks we can force Iraq to behave.
* Because we don't like that Iraq ignores the UN.
* Because we think that Saddam is a mean person.
* Because Iraq attacked UN forces in 1993
* Because we believe that Iraq doesn't like us.
* Because the UN said we could in 1990
* Because Congress said we could in 1991 and 1998
* Because we're really mad at what happened on 9/11
* Because Bush said so
Those are the reasons cited by Congress to justify the original invasion.

We invaded Iraq for it's assets period. All the justifications for the invasion have been proven to be bunk! The Iraq Air-force, Navy and Army's were all but destroyed during war in 1991.
Both political parties are at fault for falling for the hype of the executive branch. It's obvious they used either lies OR simply had no idea what they were talking about.
Think about all the people that have died because of poor judgment.

The REAL reason that George W Bush told the KNOWN LIES to get us into this war was to make himself look brave.
After he went AWOL in the Nat'l Gaurd for fear of being exposed as a cocaine addict, he needed something to make him feel like a man
ergo
we have an attack on a paper tiger
WHOOPS the MidEast has turned out to be a worse mess than it ever was

If you are unaware of the reasons the administration put forth to the people, to the UN and to Congress, then you are woefully uninformed.
It is the same reasons why Clintoned ordered a massive bombing campaign against Iraq in 1998.

America said they had WMDs.
Now America says they want to "liberate" them.
Seperating the democrats from repulicans and bickering back and forth over which side is better will get you nowhere.. ignore the posts above this.
Switching reasons for a war is a very big no-no where I'm from.

Our so called president wanted to get the guy who almost killed his daddy 10 years earlier. That's why we went to war. Not because they had weapons of mass distruction. Because they DIDN"T!!!
