I am starting a franchise and I am responsible for setting up my own website. I found another franchisee (Of the same company) in another state that has an absolutely great website. Would it be right of me to attempt to copy their site? Should I ask first? Should I contact their web designer?

I don't want to appear rude by asking if I can copy them, but it would cut my web development cost by a ton if I did.

Tuckster,

Copy? Absolutely not. You certainly don't need legal trouble for your new business right from the start.

I'd suggest contacting them, compliment them on their site and ask if you could purchase a license to copy it. This would help them recoup some expense and help you save some development costs. Basically a win for both of you.

Good luck.

To be on the safe side, contact the web site administrator and ask them for permission to use content from their site or better yet maybe share the same site and just make modifications to handle location specific items. I don't think you want to risk your business by copying the site, even if it is the same company. The franchise owner probably invested their own money into the site and will frown upon plagiarizing.

Depends whether or not you are looking to be involved in a lawsuit and damaging your reputation as a businessman. Up to you though.
