Your country, like any other major world power, has done some things in the past which are questionable. However, Britain really has done a lot of things which shaped the modern world. I would say that you should be proud of your country.

A Yank here (I was curious).

I think it's silly to be either proud or ashamed of things on never did.

I was surprised, though, no one mentioned oppressing and stealing from so many peoples all over the world for such a long time.

One person ranted about Ireland (and rightly so), but what about the rest of the empire?

The places Britain once took over and ruled (against the will of the inhabitants) are still suffering the consequences of their exploitation, and the crazy maps then drawn.

Both really, we achieved alot. Many countries wanted to join the Empire to stop in fighting and tribal warfare. I feel, its a bit harsh for an American to come on board and have a pop at us Brits. Lets be honest, their track record is not brilliant, i.e Native Americans. Every country has had some bad periods. But overall we should be proud that we achieved alot.

The British systematically starved the Irish. Is that something to be proud of? The British laws made the famine in Ireland cause starvation. Irish couldn't buy land, so land was divided into parcels that were too small to support a family on. This forced the Irish to grow only one crop, so when the blight hit there were no options for obtaining food. While the Irish were starving landowners were forbidding people to hunt or fish on their land. Through the famine England starved more people than Hitler gassed. It was genocide pure and simple.

On the whole proud... but we should also not forget some of the mistakes we made in the past.

Rule Britannia and God Save Our Queen.

Extremely proud to be British. A long and proud tradition IS something to be proud of.
We've brought so many good things to this world, it would be folly of me to list them all here.
And yes, we have fought in the past against anyone who threatens our way of life. Which I am vehemently in support of.
The fact that civilisation has moved on and replaced some of the more 'barbaric' ways, is something else to proud of. The fact that we now know that some methods of achieving our goals are wrong, and that other means are viable to achieve one's results.
