those symbols go back to Islam's pagan roots. Allah was once one of some 360 idols which were worshipped at the Kabbah before Muhammad invented that religion of his. What muhammad did was to take a pre-existing moon diety and identify it with the God of Abraham. Hence, the retention of the old symbols of the moon and star, which were originally associated with the idol.
