Salaries for civilian Astronaut Candidates are based on the Federal Government's General Schedule pay scale for grades GS-12 through GS-13.

Each person's grade is determined according to his/her academic achievements and experience.

Currently, a GS-12 starts at $65,140 per year and a GS-13 can earn up to $100,701 per year.

The correct answer is a combination of some of the previous answers. Astronauts are government employees and government pay is not all that high, but can be pretty good. Some astronauts are civil servants and some are members of the military, so pay will vary according to their civil service scale or their military rank. There are other perks like free medical care for them and their families for life as well.

A rough statement would be somewhere between 70 and 125K a year.

Astronauts are military service members so it is dependant upon their pay grade, but I'm sure they get special duty amounts also if you want to check out military pay grades go to http://usmilitary.about.com/od/2007paycharts/l/bl07offbasepay1.htm

astronauts are probably at the very minimum an O-3 so start there.
