it is not satire, the legal term is "parody". use of material either for fun, or to make social commentaries generally is considered to not be an infringement of copyright. this is an area where freedom of speech is at odds with copyrights and the courts have consistanly leaned toward protecting freedom of speech.

I believe that "Freedom of Speech" over the years has been carried a little too far. And the 'satire' comedies, are proof of that. Example: South Park. The Steve Erwin episode. That was disrespectful and disgusting. No respect for anyone. In todays age, I believe that respect has gone out the window, and some of the 'old ways' should be brought back. I know we can change a channel if we are offended by what is on, but why does today's generation think that offensive behavior and/or degrading comedy is cool or funny? Just like Andrew "Dice" Clay... I don't find him funny... I think he is a disgusting pig that should never be allowed on stage or TV. What is it about sexual comedy and extreme foul language that most find humorous? Some comedians joke about sex abuse and child porn.... what is so funny about that? The list goes on and on...but because of their "Freedom of Speech" it makes it okay? Just my opinion, but I think the world is going to hell in a hand-basket.

They are cartoons and that in itself depersonalizes the content. It's when you make it personal or real that makes it offensive to most people.
Satire points out society's foibles and make people think. Especially South Park. People are offended that children are the main characters, but it makes one think, what are we really teaching our kids. That show can give a double punch.
Shows like Saturday Night Live do the same thing in a comical manner. You will notice, however, that not all the skits come off well. I believe this is because they are living breathing people and some times the skits hit too close to home.
When powerful people who can change laws and how we live our lives do this, it can become scary. They can actually change things, now! Satire, when done correctly can get us thinking, but we need time to emotionally and intellectually change before we can actually 'do it'.

American television is truly meant to entertain. Satire and satirical forms of comedy have been used for many, many years without complaint. The first amendment to the U.S. constitution protects every citizens right to speak freely. Thus, this allows producers and writers to say, as long as it does not attempt to incriminate or attempt to physically hurt anyone, basically anything that the FCC has allowed.

Family Guy is getting sued by Carol Burnett for using a likeness of one of her characters without permission.
As much as I love and respect Carol Burnett, I really hope she loses her case against Seth McFarlane and Co. I think it's really sad that she built her career out of satire and parodies of pop-culture, but can't handle it when someone does it to her.

Satire and Parody is not illegal...It is also not illegal when a politician puts his/her foot in their mouths....Freedom of Speech
However that is not to say that it cannot be offensive...that's the difference....
If it offends you tune out or protest, boycott, don't vote for a certain candidate.....
It's your right too.
