The whole purpose was to remove a nobility that exploited the people, was inefficient and was tyrannical. They serious used and abused the majority of people while producing very little in terms of product or ideas. This was a serious pro. Nobility is very rarely a good thing.

However, rather than just remove the monarchy and nobility, they went ahead and executed too many of them when in fact the only crime they had committed was to have been born in the wrong family, the family of nobility. Then of course, those who were doing the killing were themselves killed. It was an awful transition.

Pro: Got rid of the wasteful monarchy
Con: Many people lost their lives and the country was in chaos until Napoleon took over
