Hello Jennifer, Well the best way I know is this , I use the good old fashioned soap bar for washing those whites that have gone gray & yellowish, it´s great for getting the kids socks back to their normal color (white). Soak your clothes in cold water then rub the soap in , leave them free from the water with the soap still on this lets the soap do it´s work say about 1/2 hr or so . Then back to the cold water give rinse a little add more soap then leaving the soap on put them straight into the washing machine on a 40ºc , Once the machine has finished hang your clothes outside in the sun, as the sun will do the rest of the work by bleaching your whites whiter the natural way. Also I never use bleach in the washing machine & never on clothes , it only burns the fibers & turns them that very off white color

To get dingy clothing whiter than white, try this. For cotton, pour one gallon of hot water into a plastic wastebasket (enamel or stainless steel containers are acceptable but not aluminum). Add 1/2 cup of automatic dish washing compound and 1/4Th cup of bleach stirring well, Let the clothes soak for thirty minutes, then wash as usual use 1/2 cup of vinegar in the rinse water. the garments come out snowy white. Now I did read, I know it said no bleach. So maybe you could Soak them in the dish washing compound, because that is a enzyme , and leave out the bleach, then follow the directions after that.

There is a dye out there... I don't remember the name but you will find it in your laundry detergent aisle at the store. It is a blue dye in a bottle about 4 or 5 inches tall. It is usually on the top shelf of the aisle. No joke... it is a long explaination but it has to do with how the human eye sees color. It is why most any toothpaste is blue or has blue in it. It gives the illusion of being whiter than it really is.
I refused to use bleach on my clothes because it tears them up and leaves them yellow after a while. My hubby studies how the eye perceives color for his job and I don't remember exactly why but our eyes only have three color receptors. Somehow when you put the blue on the white it is like it tricks our eyes into seeing a brilliant white. When my hubby told me to get that blue dye stuff I was like 'yeah right and I get a shopping spree when it ruins my clothes right?' But I got it and if you follow the directions it works wonders on whites!
Hope this helps... Good Luck.

My mom always told me use vineger or baking soda. I usually just use bleach, but only like every three or four times I wash my whites.
