What about just Matthew? It means the same thing, although it's common, but people can pronounce it.

I went to high school with a guy who's name is Mathias! Pronounced Ma-tee-us. I love that name! He didn't like it much and had everyone at college call him "Matt." But he's back to Mathias now that we're older. I think it's a great name with a great meaning! Isn't also a German name?

I think it's a beautiful name. I also think you should keep name choices to yourself when expecting a child. What you choose to name your child shouldn't be judged in the court of public opinion. Plus, who cares if they don't pronounce it right at this moment. Hopefully the people you're telling will be using the name prettty frequently in the years to come.
I personally enjoy meeting someone with a unique or unusual name. They tend to be pretty interesting people or have really great stories about how people mangle their names.
IMO, stop broadcasting your name plans for your new little one. Congratulations and enjoy all the great new things you'll be learning from your little peanut!!

it is really a beautiful name... my boss's first son was also named Mathias... Annoying I would agree.. but I think since it means "gift from God"... since you have accepted "this gift" why not give the most appropriate name to go along? Many blessings to you and your child...

First of all, don't ask people for their opinions on the name you choose. You have chosen a wise name for your baby. Make it known that your baby is a gift and the name is perfect. Thank you and may GOD come soon to make right the wrongs that have been done on this earth.

Annoying yes...if mispronounced, but hurtful? What the...? That is a difficult name to pronounce, though I like it a lot. But, you shouldn't feel "hurt" because someone can't pronounce the name you want properly.

It's a lovely name. But if your feelings are going to get hurt everytime someone says it wrong perhaps you should consider something else.
