Self-Care/First Aid

* Make sure you wash all clothes and shoes with hot water and a strong soap. Also, bathe pets who have come in contact with poison ivy, oak or sumac. The sap can stay on pets for many days.
* Keep your hands away from your eyes, mouth and face.
* Do not scratch or rub the rash.
* Apply any of these to the skin rash:
o Calamine (not Caladryl) lotion
o Zinc oxide ointment
o Paste made with baking soda - mix 3 teaspoons of baking soda with 1 teaspoon of water
o Take a bath with lukewarm water and an over-the-counter product called Aveeno colloidal oatmeal
o Take an over-the-counter antihistamine such as Benadryl, as stated on the label.

Best thing to, of course, is to stay away from it so I posted a link for you to look at so you can identify it.

Im highly allergic to the stuff so I usually end up having to go get shots! Other than that I take Benadryl. Other products that are useful are Sumactin, Tecnu. Ive also heard that using oatmeal and water works too! You mix it and make it thick and sticky, rub it on the infected areas, let it dry then wash it off. You can do it as many times as needed. The same also goes for baking soda and water used in the same way. Also Vicks Vaporub helps soothe the itch too!

Almost everybody is allergic to the oil on the poison Ivy leaves.. The oil can get on your shoes/clothes/hands and you can get it again and again. Calimine lotion works.. a good practice is if you've come in contact with it or think you may have take a shower with lots of soap.. it may prevent you from getting it.. and remember to wash those clothes as well..

Anyone that is allergic to the plant and comes into contact with it will get poison ivy.My son got it once.Dr. Gave him some type of ointment to put on it and I remember it took a while for it to clear up so its a pretty bad rash.

I don't get poison ivy, or poison oak either . People put calamine lotion to help with their itching that are affected by it.

Calamine lotion is the best thing I've ever used, period. To relieve the itching for a few hours, pour really hot water (the hottest you can stand) directly on the affected area. Believe me, you're going to want to gouge your eyes out because it will itch so bad for a few seconds, but afterwards, it'll feel good for awhile. A prime time to put the lotion on.

Doctors offer a shot to help it go away faster. I suggest getting it. If you don't, and you scratch it, you could get one hell of an infection.

The store also offers a large variety of creams you can use but none are "Super" Good.

Also, don't take a hot shower (Ouch)
