When you look at stars in the sky, they are round. In the solar system, I believe they are round, too. Anyone?

Imperfections in our eyes cause any small, bright spot of light to appear to have spikes, so we tend to think of stars that way. You will see the same spikes from any distant, small, bright light source, like a streetlight miles away. So people tend to draw stars as pointy objects.

They are round in reality (or at least spheroid) but they are so far away they should look like points. They don't look like points, as you've noticed, because the atmosphere here on earth makes our view a little bit blurry -- just blurry enough to make the stars look round again! If it ever gets foggy where you live, think about what a streetlight looks like at night time. It's like a big glowing ball, even though you know that the light is just coming from the center.

The "points" part may refer to the light the stars radiate. A sun has points, too, right? That's 'cos the Sun is actually a star. That is, if you don't already know it yet.

Or in other words, that's the artistic part of human beings with their imagination put to good use. =)

I don't know if there really is an answer to that, but I would guess it would have started out with a map....I guess North, East, West...and then maybe Southeast, Southwest? Could be wrong but that's my guess.
