I really like Jerry Spinelli. He is a children's author and writes some very witty (and oftentimes poignant) children's books. I teach 4th grade and my students always gleam something from his books. I highly recommend him.
However, I have a feeling you weren't asking for children's authors, so I would have to say I myself am a fan of Danielle Steele. I have enjoyed reading her books since the late '80s, and most recently have found Nicholas Sparks' books very heartwarming.

My favourite author is Jane Austen.
Some good books are:-
"Pride & Prejudice", "Emma", " Sense and Sensibility" by Jane Austen.
" A Tale Of Two Cities", "David Copperfield" by Charles Dickens.
"Rebecca" is a good book too. I am not really sure about the author.

Donald Goines.
Recommended book: "Black Gangster"
Nobody embodies the woes and depth of street life like this author. He writes books from many perspectives of people in the ghetto i.e. Hustlers, Pimps, Hoes, Hitmen...
His writing style is vividly chilling...
