The most significant and strategically important battles were fought between the British & French, but the most well-known naval battle of the American Revolutionary War would probably be Flamborough Head, where John Paul Jones captured HMS Serapis (and also where he said "I have not yet begun to fight.").

the key one was the Battle of the Chesapeake Capes......the only time from 1588 to 2007 the British Navy turned away from a fight.....and thus America was born......
