usually the splash screen that appears during booting slows don the process of loading xp. if ur computer is problem free and u expect any crashes or such things here is a way 2 disable the xp splash screen but remember removing the splash screenwill also bar u frm seeing any boot-up message that might come up.

To disable the boot screen right click on my computer choose properties and then select advance tab. under the startup and recovery section click settings. then again in system startup section click the edit button of the default operating section. now the boot.ini file will open in notepad. edit the boot.ini. add '/noguiboot', right after '/fastdetect'. make the necessary changes and save the boot.ini file. now during the start up the splash screen wont appear increasing the boot screen.

You can make windows xp faster without adding more RAM to your system.

(1) SPEEDUP START MENU : The start menu takes quite a while to display
the list of programs installed. In order to get windows xp to display
the list faster, you will have to edit some registry settings.
Remember to back up your registry before making any changes. To speed
up your start menu, go to SART>RUN and type'regedit'.This will open the
registry window. Then navigate to the following key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\control panel\Desktop.Scroll down in the right panel and double click on "menushowdelay".In the value databox, change the default value for the menu speed from 400 to a lesser number, such as 1 or even 0.Click OK.You should now
find a significant increase in the start menu speed.

(2)INCRESING CONNECTION SPEED:

some of us may find that after installing windows xp,the internet gets slower.A possible reason for this is the qos (quality
of service)installed. This service reserves 20% of the bandwidth for itself, even with qos disabled. In order to remove this reserved quota, you
will have to make sure you logged on as Administrator.Go to START>RUN
and type 'gpedit.msc'.Expand the 'local computer policy' branch, the
administrative templates' branch, and the 'network' branch.Highlight the
'qos packet scheduler' in the left window. In the right window,double-click
the 'limit reservable bandwidth' setting. Then on the setting tab, check 'enabled',and change the 'Bandwidth limt %' to read 0.

YOU SHOULD NOTICE AN IMMEDIATE BOOST IN YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION SPEED.

(3)SPEEDING UP NETWORK BROWSING:

A bug in windows causes the scheduled tasks
folder to be searched, whenever the user browses network drives. While microsoft has developed a fix for this bug,the fix slows down the
browsing of microsoft networks. In order to fix this bug,go to
START>RUN type in 'regedit' and press [enter].Navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/microsoft/windows/current version/Explorer/
Remote computer/Namespace. Then find the key {D627790-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}.Right click on it and delete it.Restart
the computer.

(4) MAKE XP FASTER & SAFE:

START > RUN > type 'services.msc' > press O.K.
To disable services from here, just right click a service & choose properties. Now,go to the list box named 'startup type'.Select
whichever of the three (automatic, manual & disable) is applicable.

Disabling most remote services will not only increse your pc's speed, but also improve security. For example, make sure to
disable the Remote Registry Services, which allows your pc regisry to be
edited from remote location.Apart from the security risks, you're probably never going to want to edit your registry over the internet anyway.

If you feel that you don't know, whether you require this service or not, just set it to 'manual' run. This way, windows
will not load it at startup, but can run it if required. Finally, be careful about selecting from the services listed above & remember to restart your pc after making changes.

BEFORE APPLYING BELOW TWEAK FIRST DO THIS:

Right click on 'my computer' icon on desktop.Select properties then select Remote. Uncheck the option"ALLOW REMOTE
ASSISTANCE TO BE SENT FROM THIS COMPUTER".

TWEAK THIS:

Also disable the "Net meeting Remote Desktop Sharing" service.Though you may not be able to ask for assistance over the net, this is an important part of security your pc.

(5) FREE MORE SYSTEM GET MEMORY:

IN XP more look & beauty leads to lower memory,to avoide this, compromise with look as under to free memory.

Press [windows]+[pause/break] to launch the system properties dialog box. Here, click on the advanced. You will see three settings buttons.Click the one related to performance. The dialog box called performance options pops up.Under visual effects, select Adjust for best performance and click apply.
Again in the performance options dialog box, click on the Advanced.Under processor scheduling and memory usage, make sure the program option is selected in each case.

(6) DISABLE LOGON PASSWORD:

START>RUN>type 'control userpasswords2'> ENTER.

IN THE USERS tab uncheck 'users must enter a user name and password to use this computer'.

TO DISABLE HELP ASSISTANT ACCOUNT:

Click on advanced button, and then click the 'advanced' button under 'advanced user management'.In the 'local users and groups window, click on the users folder in the left pane;you'll see a help assistant account on the right.Right click on it,and select properties. Under general, tick 'user cannot change password','password never expires' and 'account is disable'.Click o.k.
(7) VIRTUAL MEMORY:

The virtual memory,or paging file is the amount of space on your hard disk allotted to windows XP,which it uses as thought it were RAM.Although your hard disk is much slower than your RAM,virtual memory helps prevent your system from crashing,or hanging, when it runs out of physical RAM.

A common misconception is that virtual memory handling in windows is bad,but it isn't true for XP.Press [windows]+[pause break],to get to system properties dialog box.Go to advanced, under performance click on settings,go to the advanced tab and under virtual memory, click on change. If you have two physically separate hard drives-not partitions on the same drive-set the virtual memory on the drive that doesn't hold XP.This reduces paging file access time, and thus increases performance.

If you only have one hard drive, leave the paging file on your C: drive. If you have 128 MB RAM or less, but can spare disk space, set a large paging file. Select the 'custom size' option and set the minimum to 512 MB,and maximum to 1024 MB (1 GB).If you can't afford this much space, you need to buy more memory for XP to run smoothly.

(8) SIGHTS & SOUND = SLOWDOWN:

start>settings>controlpanel>sounds and audio devices> click 'sounds'.

Disable 'windows startup' sound, to boot faster.

Disable screen savers and desktop wallpaper to save system memory use.

(9) FOLDERS:

To optimize window explorer, go to START > RUN, type 'control folders' and press [enter].In folder options, under general, make sure 'use windows classic folders' and 'open each folder in the same window' are enabled.

Now go to view, and check 'display file size information in folder tips' and 'display simple folder view in explorer's folder list'.Under off line files, uncheck 'enable off line files'.

Hope this helps u. i did a lot of effort

Well, there are a number of things that can be causing your computer to start slowly.

1. Too many startup programs: this is by far the most common reason for a slow startup. When you install a new program, the program oftentimes add itself to the list of startup programs. The more startup programs you have the longer it takes to bootup. Try this, Start Menu > Run > type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) > Startup tab > uncheck any program you don't need to start on bootup > [Apply] > [O.K.] > Reboot.

2. Clean out any temporary files - many people don't realize that temporary files can slow down a computer. Perform a disk cleanup, Start Menu > All Programs >Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup > select "temporary files," "temporary internet files," "download programs" and recycle bin. Don't select "compressed files."

3. Defrag your hard drive - Start Menu > All programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Defragmenter > [Defra].

4. Avoid programs which are resource hogs - you mentioned that you are using Norton Antivirus and ZoneAlarm firewall. Both are excellent programs but, you should know that both programs are resource hogs and considerably slows down your computer. In fact, in a recent study, Norton Internet Security was found to drastically slow down computer performance - 20 to 40%. Unfortunately, many security software program slow down any computer performance; the major culprits are Norton, ZoneAlarm, McAfee, Webroot's SpySweeper and PC Tools' Spyware Doctor. You might want to consider less demanding software. Instead of Norton, you can try Avast or AVG antivirus. Instead of ZoneAlarm, you can try Kerio, Jetico, Comodo or Outpost firewalls.

5. Clean the registry - Windows registry is the cesspool of the operating system. The registry is a list of all programs installed on the computer as well as personal settings. Over time, it gathers erroneous keys which can slow down startup. Consider using a registry cleaner such as CCleaner or EasyCleaner - both are free. After cleaning the registry, you can defrag it using the free Erunt/Ntregopt.

6. Defrag your page file (a.k.a. swap file) with the free PageDefrag from Microsoft.

To begin click on "start", then "run" and type "msconfig". Press ok. Click on "Startup" tab. Uncheck names of those programs there that you do not need at startup. (These settings are reversible, if you uncheck something and later decide that it is necessary at startup; you can always come back and change the settings again.) Click Apply. Click close. Click on restart to reboot the computer. After reboot system configuration message window appears. Check the box that says "do not display this again", and press ok to close the box. This will keep programs from starting that use up alot of space on the processor and the ram, the first ones to go for me are yahoo messenger, and msn messenger, dont uncheck any of your antivirus or firewall programs, these are programs you want to start with windows........

Simple instructions

1. open the start menu

2. click "run"

3. type msconfig, then click ok

4. click on the "startup" tab

5. uncheck unwanted programs.

6. click apply

7. restart your computer

1st step: check your disk. open My Computer, right-click on the drive, click 'properties', click the tab 'Extra', click 'check disk'.
Also check the disk surface for errors (check the box).

2nd step: Defrag your drive (same menu).

If that doesn't work, it sounds to me like a full re-install wouldn't be out of order.
You (and we) have no way of knowing what kind of stuff has accumulated on your laptop.
A reinstall will clean everything.
